The Brighton Swimming Club and Sea Bathing for Men

In my last blog I commented on the exceptionally fine weather we're having today. Since then I've been pondering my own proximity to the seafront, so I thought I'd try and find one of those 'naughty' postcards that were part of the seaside scene once upon a time. Instead I happened across the above photo, taken in the 1860s. Nineteen fully-grown men have agreed to be photographed, having stripped down to their wherewithalls. But, in order to maintain common decency and decorum, each of the gentlemen is wearing a topper. I wonder if they wore their hats when they went swimming?
