This is the sort of scene we imagine for a traditional Christmas, enacted here by Queen Victoria and her family. There is another version, less familiar to us nowadays yet equally traditional. It was the sort of Christmas that was had by a much larger number of people:

In our own age there are people who still live in chronic want, and will not be overindulging in good living.
I struggle with these thoughts every time Christmas comes round.
