Open to interpretation?

Islam is very much in the news of late. It's believers maintain that it is a peaceful religion, and the people who carry out acts of depravity in its name are misinterpreting the faith. Given the regimes in the islamic world, who without exception all have draconian penal codes, where free thinking is not only proscribed but punished, where the clergy have their hands in government in addition to controlling ordinary people's lives and administering cruel and arbitrary punishments. Then of course we have that supposed splinter group that has embarked upon an orgy of cruelty.
I can't help but ask the following question. If its scriptures are so open to alleged misinterpretation, doesn't this strongly suggest that they may be seriously flawed?
For decades now I have been heartily sick and tired of people making apologies and excuses for it.
