I once heard an interview in French with Edith Piaf, in which the interviewer asked her what the most important things in life were. Her replies were 'to love' and 'to be loved'. I used to think this was just fluffy, sentimental trash, but now I think the lady had a point.
I have always known what love is, but only lately have I started to understand what it's like to feel it. I do not feel empathy for people I do not know, nor for animals, but I love the people who have become my family and close friends. I cherish them. I can now feel the love that is given to me, rather than just acknowledging it. My life is infinitely better for this gift.
