I love Henry Mayhew's writing. In London Labour and the London Poor (1861) he interviews people and records what they say in their own words. We hear the authentic voices of Victorian Londoners, cockney and all. For me it makes fascinating reading, an is very moving. Mayhew is no saint though. He passes scathing moral judgements at every opportunity, just like every other Mid-Victorian of his class.
I have just obtained the complete work, rather than the extracts and abridged versions I had previously read. I'm quite delighted with it.
